Agreed, as I've listened to more music over the years I feel like guitar tuning vs. heaviness is almost purely psychological.

Genuinely. Like, drop tuning is a short and easy path to getting a “heavier” sound but the returns start to diminish the lower you get. And I feel more averse to it as I’ve grown and spent more time with the guitar and other kinds of music that aren’t hardcore or 21st century metal. It’s possible to come up with a heavy riff in any tuning, honestly. You just have to have talent lol.
