For my tastes anyway. Still a 4.5 so barely a criticism

Hmmm, I think this is a lot more mature and that plays into its strengths. Both are 5s in my book

Maxinquaye is shit compared to this btw. It's quintessential because of its influence and era but it's a pretty inconsistent album. I mean it's Tricky, the guy doesn't really know how to make an album.

Not for lack of trying that's for sure

Yeah, my judgement's not really based on the technicalities of trip hop, I guess I just like Tricky's style and he blatantly put all his best ideas on that one album (probably every good idea he'd stocked up in his career to that point).

Mezzanine is technically flawless, sleek, 'mature' as said above.

Give me a choice of which album to listen to start to finish...Maxinquaye wins 9 times out of 10. Prefer the atmosphere, dig the variety, enjoy every tune. That's what gets it an extra .5

Despite them being in keeping and without flaws, do I actively enjoy Man Next Door or having a second run through of Exchange on there? Not really

Skilled Mechanics felt pretty uninspired yeah.

I think he's always been trying different things.

PMT and Angels are very ambitious albums, they both fall short but not through a lack of trying or ideas, they're a bit too experimental/odd if anything. Tricky's personal tastes are probably partly to blame.

Then he just collaborated even more and lost focus. I think recently he's tried to rekindle the Maxinquaye magic too, so as much as yes in some ways he's failed, I don't see a lack of ambition

Debut albums can be a one off, the artist might be incorporating ideas they had two years earlier, or five years earlier, even a decade earlier who knows. It can be almost a 'best of' of their formative song writing career. It can even work out as a form of automatic quality control, but usually after that the same circumstance won't recur. People ask you to work a little faster. Or you turn into Axl Rose.

Angel in your car, driving through traffic lights at night, everything saturated from a recent rainfall, oil on the streets. I love it.

Inertia Creeps. Having just throttled a prostitute in the back of your ford transit van while the rain is hammering on the roof. Sublime.
