@odal i agree the point kinda got away from us.
"Even though all those songs would be great, you'd still be checking your watch and wanting them to wrap it up."
I mean it depends? And for the persons tolerance for it. One of my favorite albums is deathconciousness and that clears 80 mins easy but I'm still enamored by the time Earthmover wraps up. I think the main issue i take umbrage with is that saying that Kendrick doesn't earn the time stamp with MM because it's one of his best narratives up there with TPaB or GKMC. He'll of a lot better than DAMNs too btw even though it's objectively a banger album.

in all serious it really depends on the content of the album.
tpab and mr morale are an identical 78min long. both albums are loaded with skits and extra curricular bullshit. tpab is good / interesting / adventurous enough to justify those 78min. mr morale is not. literally as simple as that tbh
i don't even think being "good" is a requirement. just needs to keep things fresh. an album like stankonia is a complete mess of skits and duds but feel like its adventurousness is kinda what make it what it is. a lot of these "overly long" hip hop albums especially end up being greater than the sum of their parts.

i personally prefer the longer the album the better. i like to get everything i possibly can from an artist i enjoy, for better or worse. the album medium is sometimes arbitrary beyond being a home for a collection of closely made/related songs.
but there are definitely cases where i'll curate and trim a tracklist up to be better. my version of Donda is my fav kanye album and its trimmed to 15 tracks with my own disc 2/ "Donda 1.5" of 12 other tracks.
but i dont blame length for it because length is merely a consequence of the amount of tracks which is my issue with the overall critique because again, who's to say an artist will even pick those songs you favor. im an albumist through and through, but i think people put too much faith or discretion in the medium.

Deathconsciousness is one of my all-time favorites too!
I think that one does an amazing job of keeping things sonically and narratively interesting, but you're right in that it comes down to personal tolerance. The inverse is that I really don't care if an artist wanted the project to be two-dozen songs long instead of the label forcing them, if it's long in the tooth then it's long in the tooth.
One need not look further than the latest Weeknd project for a pretty decent example of a snake eating its own tail.

Those are two oppositional stances though, no?
An albumist would hold the work as the work without any extra-curation. An album is ostensibly the artist's intention. If they intend for a large collection to merely be a lego assembly set, then that's kinda lazy.

well, albumist in the sense that i mostly consume music through full albums and strictly never skip tracks. those cases of modifying an album are pretty rare for me but they are an exception haha.

Man, I will never not be disappointed in Mr. Morale. It feels disjointed in messaging and identity and musicality. And him following the example of other popular rappers in terms of flow and adlibs was a detriment to the music imo, plus I can barely remember any beats off of it. I honestly like Damn better. GNX is a step in the right direction, but I know he has far better work left in him if he would only push himself.
