freezing cold take but this would be so good if almost every song was shorter

Chasing Light is their best song since 1988.

^ I definitely wouldn't go that far, but it's certainly one of the highlights on here. Idk why, but that main riff reminds me of the old Armored Core soundtracks (not genre-wise, but just the notation and overall vibe)

Could say that about any metallica album for the last 25 years.

It really is such a shame because there’s a lot of good ideas for 3-4 minute songs buried in 6-8 minute ones.
“Chasing Light is their best song since 1988.”
eh, it’s probably the best song here, and James actually sounds like he has some fire lit up under his ass but I’d take Spit Out the Bone and more than a few tracks off Death Magnetic, and Beyond Magnetic for that matter.

Chasing Light is the one from this I return to a lot yeah
Even then it could lose a minute of tape

Room of mirrors is the best song here and honestly the only one I really return to

I still enjoy this album a lot. From the title track to the closer is probably one of the best runs of songs they've had on an album since the black album. The back-to-back of Crown of Barbed Wire, Chasing Light, and If Darkness Had a Song is great.

The latter part of this album's really enjoyable. Opener's decent, then quite a slog, then a strong end run.

I still dig this, worthy album imo

It's my least favorite of the post-St. Anger albums (not counting Lulu of course), but still pretty good. If they just trimmed it down a bit and removed a few of the less interesting songs, it could've been around the 3.5-3.8 range for me. The highlights are some of my favorite songs of Metallica's later work though, especially Chasing Light and Room of Mirrors
I must've been all over this album when it came out though, because my 2023 Spotify Wrapped was filled to the brim with these songs. lol

Understandable tbf.
The album art isn't unappealing. I'd go as far as to say none of their LP's has a bad artwork.
