White Pony is very 3.5'y, bogged down by a bunch of average tunes. Could do with a few more heavy bangers too.
You can bring up production but that first Korn album made Ross Robinson a household name and everyone hired him to try and replicate it (Sepultura, Slipknot, etc). 'Roots' in particular is a love letter to the Korn debut
First six songs of the Korn debut are still the most raw and enjoyable for me. Deftones are the more consistent band though, that cannot be denied

When Korn came out there was nothing like them - NIN meets Cypress Hill meets Portishead meets RATM. Adrenaline followed and it was ok, sounded a bit flat though.
I don't know why Davis' vocals sound so much better on the debut, like a far richer voiced Trent Reznor with added camp scat
