I agree with what both of you said. Post metal originated from sludge but I can still be post metal without sludge (to an extent).

What would you call something with long song structures, harsh vocals, atmosphere, but no sludge elements?

depends on what it is instead of sludge

In the case of post metal, it started from sludge influence, but just like any genre can, evolved to more than just atmospheric sludge. The sludge is still there and always should be, but in the case of songs like Altered Course, it doesn't have to be.

sure genres evolve all the time but the basic elements still need to be there
mixing post metal (aka atmospheric sludge imo) with other genres is another thing, which is why i think bands like, say, knut can be considered as post metal to an extent

it's not that the genre changed, its definition did too. hell when Aenima was labeled post-metal, it's cuz the guy was unaware of TSIB being a thing. it wasn't just sludge elements mixed in the music either, a fairly strong industrial spirit was mixed too. It was in TSIB & Times of Grace, in Celestial, and The Beyond through similar influences that weren't just Godflesh.

I can't see Knut as post-metal, that's really stretching shit. You're probably referring to Challenger and they had their mathy sludgecore thing going on before Isis's popularity.

I agree, but I still think things can be considered post metal even if the sludge is removed. Sludge is a big factor in defining it, but it's not the biggest thing. For example, if something had every element of post metal except the sludge. Let's say the dense sludge riffs were replaced by equally as heavy riffs, that can still be post metal in my eyes.

A big point of post-rock and post-metal was their progressions. Progressive metal mixed with black or death metal is out there, but there are restraints and patience found in post-rock and doom metal that done right is really effective and moving. You can have your heavy riffs, your twinkly guitar lines, your dynamics lasting twice/thrice as long as Weight's, mix fast-paced metalcore sections, your death metal without making it progressive death or your black metal without making atmospheric black...
just make it good

Yep! That's what makes post metal and post rock one of the best genres out there (imo).
Also, what's Weight? Haven't heard of that album.

TheSpirit and I were having this conversation when I went to visit him. I always thought it was generalized as "not all post-metal is sludge, but all atmospheric sludge can be considered post-metal"

Oh, my bad. Weight is one of the best songs from Oceanic.

I completely agree.

I don't discriminate. I love my twinkles as much as I love my punishing riffs
