Yeah this is so much more focused I feel and coherent, but the more sporadic nature of Heritage has its appeal too
There's definitely weak moments on this but the highs are better than anything on the last two I think

Revisiting this revealed fewer high points, but greater consistency than I recall. I’d still say it’s my fave rock-era Opeth, even if I enjoy the general vibe of Heritage a tad more, the individual cuts here are perhaps easier to love.

Yes it is, and the theme is quite tragic. But the intro-wailings and then the huge guitar chord were juicy right from the first listen

I really like the presence of the acoustic section. It is sudden and ultimately not "essential", but it adds a certain depth to the song by stripping down the verse you hear at the beginning. Not to mention it simply makes it more of a journey overall

Yes, it's brilliant. Album keeps growing. Biggest grower ever. Think about bumping it to a 4.

Better than Sorceress and Pale Communion for sure. Good album

I prefer this to Heritage, but they both stand alone as worthwhile releases to me. Close call. The less said about the other two the better.

Nah, Heritage has all the right ideas and dynamics, but the songs feel more present here. Heritage played with pauses and silences. This relies on lush soundscapes.

"Heritage played with pauses and silences." One of the main reasons I love it so much. Super tastefully done.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. It's weird and new for them and it works. Feels like they enjoyed themselves again.
