I do agree with this being more stripped down, which wasn't ideal at this point of their career. They should have played a bit more with this production-wise. I think 10,000 Days sounds better because the band produced the album themselves and Barresi only mixed it.

i just saw fantano's and i gotta agree with him.
It's a decent album by most people's standards, but looking at the rest of Tool's catalogue it pales in comparison.
It's kind of a bummer because after 13 years it's a little underwhelming.
Maybe they don't have it in themselves anymore to toil over it.
I thought this album would be either really angry or really zen. It's neither
