Batter up is pretty vanilla, imo. This whole thing is vanilla.

there's no agreeing on this band's songs outside of the top two or three ever, there's just too much consistent quality to the point that everyone formed their own connections and strong opinions about different tracks. it's a lesson I learned when I ranked every song in their discog and virtually everyone had a problem with it.

what about it seems rushed though? you're obv entitled to an opinion but to me the lyrics seem very well thought out and it's not the kind of song that requires elaborate production or anything. at first I just found it boring but I never questioned its worthiness to make the LP; of course now I view it as one of their better ballads. for me it is easily better than, say, "boy who blocked his own shot" or "bed"

Not much to the CD inside sleeve, just some abstract pictures but it is nice to finally own the album physically

[Verse 1]

Do you know the words that make the hidden door open?

Can you speak my secret name and fix me?

I have no heart, I have no brain

Lord I have no courage

Can you get me home again?

[Refrain]

Could never be heaven without you

Could never be heaven without you

Never be heaven without you

[Verse 2]

I was drowning in the lake, damned

Over a dead mining town

The cars and the homes lay still in the water

The deeper I sank, the less I died

The trees swayed, slow in the tide

There were people I love below me singing

[Refrain]

And all of the songs were about you

And all of the songs were about you

And all of the songs were about you

The whale is well-rehearsed

Swimming circles in the church

A Cardinalfish says, "God is dead"

The whale says, "Get out of my head

Get out of my head

Get out of my head"

You are not alone

We are not separate

My daughter's shoulders are my shoulders

My son's hands my hands

My wife's heart my own heart

I've heard the outer darkness is really nice this time of year

[Refrain]

Could never be heaven without you

Never be heaven without you

Never be heaven without

Could never be heaven without you

Never be heaven without you

Never be heaven without you

[Outro]

"You've got so many things that you do believe you've been conditioned to believe in..."

"Mmhmm."

"And then if you try and break away from your conditioning and try and be sort of individual and, in least in our day and age right now, you start to think, 'Well, am I really doing this because I really want to be different? Am I doing it because there's such an emphasis placed to...'"

"I miss you."

"You don't know how to break through this contradictory mess... and really find your own... authentic individuality."

Oh and I had the most random in-depth dream about seeing these guys live; in the dream they played this super creepy version of the Daisy t/t that they never performed before and then the lights all went out, everyone held up candles, and Jesse sang Lit Me Up solo with the entire crowd.

It made me so fucking mad that it wasn't real.

"Goddammit you look so lovely but you sound, sound, sound so ugly"

That line makes me laugh for some reason

The whale said makes no sense. And what the fuck is a Cardinalfish. I don't believe that those are the real lyrics.

There's a talking donkey in the bible and people still seem to love it, so I'll gladly take a talking whale in a Brand New album
