Just cuz this isn't an hour of masturbatory prog doesn't mean that the musicianship doesn't warrant a 5. And it's fine if you don't like this album, I don't give a shit what your taste in music is, but I take issue with the implication that you don't like it because you've matured more than the rest of us.

as far as 90s independent rock goes this has outstanding musicianship especially if you take in to account the band's upbringings
its also aged far better than many contemporaries

many current bands in a diff scenes could learn a whole lot from mm ethos

Proglodytes would laugh at a nice chunk of what I consider classic. There are much better 90s indie rock bands to have emerged than MM. I think Brock is an excellent writer, but he has a lot of songs that are cleverly worded vapidity. Thats not to say there arent songs he's written that are terrifically visceral and lasting.

I mean if we're talking about MM's career as a whole there are definitely songs they've released that feel kind of thematically hollow but on this album specifically I don't think so.

Yeah, this is one of their good albums. The real shitty stuff started after this.

you got antartica and building nothing after this so not really

I think everything from their debut to Good News... is great, We Were Dead and Strangers have their moments but are both pretty inconsistent overall.

I really only dig 90s Modest Mouse. The only problems with the first two albums is that they’re a little too long to sit through in one go when I’m in the mood for it. It’s not that any album can’t be this long, but I’m not sure MM really justifies the length. Like none of the songs are bad, but it’s just a lot altogether. They fixed their runtime problem on future albums, but then the songwriting got boring, so I dunno

I need to check Building Nothing

I agree, their albums could be shorter. I need to revisit Antarctica again, I remember that being their best. Above all else Ocean Breathes Salty is one of the best alt songs ever.

It had to be done, there are just so many incredible songs here.

Damn straight. Aside from maybe tracks 9 & 10 (and even those aren't half bad), i can think of very few albums that are so consistently strong front-to-back.

Agreed, tracks 5, 9, and 10 are the only moderately weak points. The runs from Cockroach to Cowboy and from Shit Luck to the end are two of the very best in indie.
As a whole I still slightly prefer TM&A but there’s not too big a gap.
