-- pretty much no death metal made post 1995 is better than anything made pre 1995
I humbly beg to differ, a lot of pre 1995 death metal has not aged well.

I particularly love artificial brain, ulcerate and ad nauseam. I know they get repped a fair amount but they are not without their detractors. Ulcerate is kind of locked in to their sound but I still love it. I could use 5 more albums like everything is fire tbqh.
But brain and ad nauseam are doing some really fresh inspired shit as far as I'm concerned. To be entirely honest, the only album released after 2001 that I like more than Nihil Quam Vacuitas Ordinatum Est is Everything is Fire and that's my favorite album

Brain in particular are very forward thinking, creative, innovative and rip hard af. Their sound is really their own. Love them to bits.

“I humbly beg to differ, a lot of pre 1995 death metal has not aged well.”
that was worded poorly because im being a cheeky dickhead but what I really meant was “the best from back then is still better than the best from today”.
of course like I said there’s still a bunch of killer music being released, it just isn’t quite as totemic as the classics.

@osmark
Fair enough. I'm not opposed to modern recording altogether. Just, more often than not, I feel like it's made it easier to take shortcuts and bands and especially recording engineers often take the lazy approach and it results in boring production that sounds like a ton of other albums... whereas all those albums 30+ years ago don't sound like each other production wise because they werent plugging into axe fx or whatever and choosing some kinda preset with minor tweaks
"But yeah, from my hometown of Stockholm, Morbus Chron's Sweven is better than Entombed's Left Hand Pass. Y'all probably think I'm an idiot and I just might be but on most days that's how I feel lol"
As far as dm classics go, left hand path has never personally been a huge favorite of mine lol
Gonna agree with hype. It's hard to eclipse the founders. I don't think that's really nostalgia for me either because I didn't grow up with those albums. I just legitimately think it's hard to draw such direct inspiration from something and be better than a band that was creating something fresh. That's mostly á reference to osdm in particular though and not stuff like dissodeath that's pretty different from something like suffocation

It is easier to take shortcuts if one wants to. However I don't think a lot of bands that are serious about their art is doing this. Plus analog and vintage gear is as popular as ever. I feel that modern production can add that extra bit of clarity to releases by taking advantage of things like subtle dynamic EQ/compression. Back in the day a lot of producers experimented with the heavy dm sound and while it has a lot of character sometimes it sounded a bit shit imo lol. But that adds to the charm as well so I can't really piss on it.
As for your other points I get it too. I guess I just kind of view the osdm revivalists as any other band within the genre and don't really care that they're heavily influenced by their earlier peers. Tomb Mold's latest is totemic for me.

I do think there is some sweet fresh shit going on in dm but I mostly agree with hype that it's damn near impossible to surpass the greatness of something that's original, even if the imitation is, technically-speaking, "done better". Originality is an angle that u absolutely cannot fake

@Hyperion: in my book 1998 is the best year in Death Metal.
Nitpicking aside I think that Death Metal has been quite vibrant in the past 12 to 15 years and had a serious slump in the mid to late 00s.
