yeah, so for you Starless is 'over-the-top', the rest is at the very least 'top tier music' and thus the merely 'good' (or whatever your criteria is) Providence, isn't enough to lower your rating (which make sense).
I would still have this album inside my top 50 for sure (I just don't have many 5s currently, so it's not a contender for promotion at this moment in time - although it once was).

Demon: Yeah I mean, at the end of the day ratings are super arbitrary. Like, I'm sure people have rated albums a 4/5 that I've given 5 to, and they probably like it even more than I do, because everyone's criteria is so different. Many of the 5s I've given over the decades haven't survived the test of time, and my list now is dramatically different than it was even just a few years ago. In another few years it'll have probably changed again. We're all different people at different times in our lives

I like the wet slapping too, probably my fave element of the whole song.
Oh yeah definitely, whatever it means to someone will differ greatly from person to person. My ratings are always changing as is the 'scale' I use (or evolving, sounds better!) and honestly I can be a little keen in downgrading the upper echelons of my ratings to keep them current. However, I also take an absolute age to promote new things (hence my 0.61% ratio of 5s & 2.57% of 4.5s - courtesy of RYM). I'm trying to improve on the latter.

the squelching really does not agree with my sensory issues lmao, not to mention it just distracts from one of Bruford's sickest performances. it's a little less egregious on Easy Money

Every few months I return to this album to remind myself of the degradation of popular western music in the 21st century.

A very interesting comment. I liked it.

Even if I was to accept the broader point, are KC the best example to use for that boomerific declaration? What I mean is, were they *that* 'popular' in their heyday, or was it more of a gradual rise in appreciation over many decades? - I suspect the truth is closer to the latter

It's actually criminal that In the Court has a higher average than this.

Super important album, but it just doesn't hold up the way this does. The bookends rule, and Epitaph is pretty great, but this album utterly buries it. Starless alone dunks on that entire album.

Starless clears but otherwise it’s incredibly close imo. I may give Court the edge these days in fact. I used to be team Red tho.

Larks, Court, and Discipline. I'm inclined to say Court is still my fave since I had it 5'd at one point, but those 3 are just about interchangeable
