Awesome how everyone always loved this, considering the new vocalist.

I 'member when the party line was "NO LAYNE NO ALICE". I'm glad people have finally caught up and realized this album rules

might be one of those "critics love it, the fans hate it" cases. I remember a lot of negativity

There's still a lot of negativity around this out in the real world. Sucks for them.

^ I was about to say, there's definitely a large number of Layne purists out there who don't want anything to do with this incarnation of the band. And they get really hostile about it too, especially on Youtube and other social media

From my experience AiC fans have totally embraced this and the idea that many people hate it seems a made-up, unnecessary conflict as is popular in music discussions (see 'x is under/overrated'), but apparently we need more science before people accept my version of things.

According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Gives_Way_to_Blue#Release_and_reception

Critical reception is one thing. The album was defn critically well received to the point where people calling it a downright miraculous achievement.
Fan reception in my experience has been pretty skewed based on the age of the fan. I'd say that for 40+ fans it's 50-50 while it's much more favorable for everyone under 40.

It's definitely an age thing from what I've experienced. Most of the negative rhetoric comes from older fans who haven't let go of the past. They'll say stuff like "nice tribute act" or "no Layne = no AiC". In fact, the same exact thing is happening with Avenged Sevenfold right now, as a lot of their older fans can't accept any material without The Rev (despite the fact that both bands had other equally gifted songwriters that could carry the torch. Hell, Jerry was always the main songwriter of AiC)

I can't believe it's been 6 years since Rainier Fog... Jesus Christ. That album wasn't nearly as good as this. I wonder if there's another one in the pipeline

Oh yeah. I remember the first time I heard A Looking in View and was like holy shit. I strongly lean toward heavier Alice.

I think that was the first track I heard off this and like DAMN, I wasn't expecting that much bite. There are so many great tracks here but All Secrets Known is fucking supernatural. Like they are conjuring the spirit of Layne from the grave
