Same here. Opeth opened up so many doorways to my taste in extreme music

Amon Amarth got me into the growls, now I don't even understand how I was ever put off by them. It can be done poorly or well like anything else, just keep listening to the music and the growls will just make sense after a while.

just jam Ghost Reveries if you're trying to get into the growls. The production is so fantastic that the growls fit the music perfectly and make it much more intense when they come in.

Most consider Ghost Reveries to be one of their best and a perfect gateway album for their heavier side so you should probably start there if this isn't doing it for you right now.

Yeah, I got 6 of their albums and I'm digging Ghost Reveries and Damnation way more than this and Still Life... at least for now

yeah but don't tell your mum, if she catches wind of a something called "ghost reveries" and that it's a "gateway" to "heavier stuff" she's going to think you're dabbling with the devil's lettuce

Opeth was my gateway to prog, but at first I was pissed at all the random acoustic passages breaking up the m/

Yeah tbh when I first tried to get into them it felt too Metal -> Acoustic -> Metal (repeat), but it's so fluid plus the atmosphere they create is p cool

Then again I'm still not their biggest fan so that's just my take

It's all good dude it took me the longest time for harsh vox in general to grow on me so not liking growls right away it quite alright.

Not liking growls at all is quite alright.

Not saying that goes for me, I think they can be good sometimes.

Mikael is certainly one hell of a gateway for these types of vocals though. Like holy crap he's not human, how can he be?

I came to appreciate growled vocals through Opeth as well. It did take quite a bit of time for me though. I remember hearing Ghost of Perdition for the first time and being completely put off by it.

The friend that showed them to me suggested I try a different album and recommended Damnation. When I got to the record store though, I could not remember the name of the album he suggested and ended up buying Morningrise.
