you're exemplifying why these types of descriptions are useless. take anything angsty or depressing. if it doesn't work for you it's overwrought or melodramatic. something that's really sweet/ romantic? cloying or sappy. something that's bouncy? shallow. something that's "big"? pretentious. something that's mind-bending? still pretentious. but obviously if you enjoy it, then it becomes poignant, or heart-warming, or fun, or epic, or life-changing.
2nd half just isn't as good as the first, but it's not any more overwrought or melodramatic than the first half. you're just putting some pointless pseudo-objective label to delineate between the "good" songs and the "bad" songs, as if to deny that it's all teenage angsty bullshit and some songs just appeal to you more than others... well except "jesus" anyways.
(love ya cyg but that post was self-important and thoughtless shite in general. play your hand straight like zak if you're gonna go down that route. he's obnoxious but at least consistent)
