As a man in his 30s I'm also blissfully ignorant of what kids play at frat parties nowadays, but when I attended college it was a mix of radio faux grunge (like Nickelback, Seether) and terrible pop like Kesha and 3OH!3.

"Also this could be wrong on my part but basically any rock that would be played at a frat party"

Rock was way out of fashion by the time I went to (admittedly few) frat parties during college in the mid 2010s. It was mostly hip-hop at that time, though EDM's rise was notable too.

Also I've literally never heard the term butt rock and was better off for it

The term Butt Rock stems from rock radio stations nationwide US in the late 90s to mid 2000s using the phrase "Nothing But Rock". The joke was they kept pausing long between the nothing and the but and it sounded like they were saying "Butt Rock". Radio rock is what it basically means.

EDIT: just flipped to the last page of comments and I am happy to share this origin with you all. Regardless of no one knowing where the term came from, it seems like everyone generally gets what it means.

I knew the origin but actually defining which bands fall into it is a bit muddy sometimes. I stand by this band not belonging there at all.

butt rock also carries a certain air of corny machismo that Anberlin is way, way too softboi to ever come close to

I did not know that, Feather, but that's a pre funny origin story for the term, ha

I never knew the actual origins either (or that it had real origins and wasn't just slang), so that's neat.

>"As far as i know there is still an Anberlin album coming"

My inner 15 year old is freaking out. That still happening? I thought maybe I dreamed it back when they released a so-so single after doing the live streams.
