@Talons, well, we're still talking about them today, so I guess it indirectly shows we have hope left somewhere deep inside of ourselves.

I think we just talk about them cos we can rather than we have hope lol

I still have hope. It's bad, but it's qualitative bad. It's complicated.

As I don't think this is a bad album at all I'm looking forward to the next release. I still hope they somehow manage to blow me away again just like in the good ol' days. I can feel they still have the potential to create something really special.

Not gonna happen, not with portnoy AND moore gone.

Portnoy started the band's movement towards shit metal, and Petrucci liked it a lot and decided to continue down that path. So I don't think Portnoy would revive the creative spirit. Moore on the other hand. But at the same time Moore has done some cool stuff with OSI but again it's not really ground breaking.

Although I also think that Moore had the best style by far they at least managed to create some awesome pieces of music without him. As for Portnoy I'm not convinced that they won't 'recover' from his departure as he really restricted the band with his dominant personality in a way.

Portnoy understood that they got into a bad path and thought best to stop for some years. No matter how obnoxious he is, or arrogant, I believe they should have listened. They need to stop, re-evaluate, rething and redecide. Then move on. I would be happy if this year they don't put out a new album. This would mean they approach their jobs differently, not as a factory but as music artists who value what they're doing.

The thing is I don't think they'll approach the music very differently anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if they considered this a "softer" album and now they compose a more aggressive album. It'll take a lot to knock some sense into them. The newer fans love the new albums and so why would DT change their direction? The money is coming in.
I didn't think I'd listen to songs off this until much later, but I did. Better than ADTOE imo.

Oh hells yeah. RIP DT, you were at the forefront when you were in form.

"If you're one dimensional, that just limits you," he (LaBrie) said. "How could you possibly be eclectic ... if you just listened to metal? It's crucial to my development (to have different tastes)."

lol theres so many quotes from them like that, their lack of self-awareness is pretty astonishing

portnoy's not right either considering he quit so he could join fucking Avenged Sevenfold
|

Album Rating: 2.5
He was right initially though, they really should've waited 5 or 10 years to refresh themselves creatively, especially if what he said was true about how constantly he was doing stuff for the band
|
| |
He didn't quit "so he could join Avenged Sevenfold," he quit, and later, bearing no impact on his decision to quit, joined Avenged Sevenfold.

that's not what happened, he was in Sevenfold, started liking it a lil too much, quit Dream Theater, and Sevenfold was like "uh, this isn't permanent, dude", and then he tried to weasel back into DT but they already had Mangini
|

I'm pretty sure that's not what happened
