Man, I forgot about obliteration... yeah they're up there with the classics for sure. I like some disso and tech/prog death but I still wouldn't put much of it up there with the classics

Yeah I dunno, I like Artificial Brain, Defeated Sanity and Ulcerate fine enough but that is like not even close to being my style as much

Never checked Dead Congregation

I don't necessarily enjoy disso more than osdm tbh I just think that some modern albums sound better or are just more fun to listen to. It really goes from band to band though, but generally I've just happened upon cooler production and blend of ideas on newer releases. But maybe that's my queue to revisit some of the classics, because a couple of them truly are some of the best dm out there like The Erosion of Sanity.

I dunno what my point is other than I'm not really nostalgic nor a purist about metal in general.

But yeah I honestly think that Obliteration, Morbus Chron, Tomb Mold, Venenum among a couple of others have produced better albums than this or Altar of Madness.

Oh and since they were mentioned a lot last page and because they're insane. Defeated Sanity.

I personally have never understood the hype for tomb mold. Not bad or anything just don't think they're incredible

"I just think that some modern albums sound better"

All personal preference of course but i feel the opposite. Hate the sterilized sound of most newer metal. Love the more natural sound of those late 80s early 90s death/thrash albums. That natural beefy guitar tone from effigy is just chefs kiss. A lot of modern death metal tries to sound more organic by being "cavernous" but I don't feel it mostly

I'm not referring to modern brickwalled production. Production has just gotten better mostly thanks to better technologies so albums can sound really natural without being flat or overly muddy (except for when it's done on purpose which can be really cool).

As for cavernous production, personally I enjoy it on some albums. Tastes shmates. There are cleaner examples that kick the shit out of most production jobs I've heard though such as The Sanguinary Impetus or Ad Nauseams two albums.

I'm on a meeting, but I just wanted to comment that I'm pretty obsessed with Tomb Mold lol they fucking rule dude, I think the hype is warranted

Obliteration is also amazing - Defeated Sanity I can only handle in pieces

HARD disagree about those newer bands releasing better albums than things like this, early Suffo/Incantation/Dying Fetus/Pestilence/Death/Cryptopsy/Entombed/etc - even the best newer death metal albums dont do what those albums do for me but to each their own

At this point I gues agree to disagree

pretty much no death metal made post 1995 is better than anything made pre 1995 unless your name is defeated sanity.

Lol absolutely, legend material indeed. But I already knew you guys are gentlemen and scholars so hardly news.

But yeah, from my hometown of Stockholm, Morbus Chron's Sweven is better than Entombed's Left Hand Pass. Y'all probably think I'm an idiot and I just might be but on most days that's how I feel lol

that one is close but when i think about the stuff it’s influenced by I would still put them above it.

it’s just the simple fact that the “imitation” (and I don’t necessarily mean that as an pejorative) can never eclipse what it’s imitating. that’s kind of the inherent flaw with nostalgia based throwback music.

like as much as I love even defeated sanity I would still put pierced from within over anything they released. there’s just an inimitable quality to the foundations that nothing that comes after can really totally eclipse.

I think it absolutely can if it also brings something new to the table and/or is just executed better.

Most art is imitation to a certain degree.

sure but I think OSDM is a little different in that it is explicitly calling back to the “old ways”.

in the end it doesn’t really matter that much im just always gonna hold the classics in a little higher regard. there’s obviously still killer music being made.

Yeah for sure and I can see where you're coming from. Might be time to jam Suffocation again so cheers for the reminder lol.

yeah i share the same sentiment
most new DM bands just try to imitate OSDM bands with little success, at least a few recent bands are doing something more than just imitate.
i personally would love to see bands actually take more outside influences than just their favorite OSDM band but whatever
