The loudest band I’ve seen live was a two piece. I mean, thanks to amplifiers and such anything is possible

What kind of venue did you see them? I saw them at the Brighton dome and the sound was absolutely deafening

"Yes, that's why it's actually good. GY!BE can't into more complex music"
Since when are GYBE complex? Or even trying to be complex outside a few tracks on Yanqui etc ?
"muh spoken word muh drone"
Yes, you have a bias against ambient and noise music. Calling spoken word stupid is really stupid though. The "genre" contains a wide range of styles.

Spoken word without a proper pitch is a bad idea and I will shit even on Schoenberg's work for doing that. And what I meant with the first thing is that GY!BE are (apparently) only good when doing things as simple as possible, that's why I said "GY!BE can't into *more* complex music" and not just "GY!BE can't into complex music"; they don't really try to do something I'd call complex, they just do the typical post-1945 thing of trying to sound as unique as they can. Sometimes they use less simple (that's probably a better way of saying it than "more complex") arrangements than the ones they use in Monheim, but it looks like the more simple they keep things the better it is, or maybe it's just that they lack good ideas.

This is maybe the 4th best GY!BE, very solid band. Whoever said 'Motherf***er = Redeemer' for Godspeed's pinnacle gets a cookie.

"saw these guys live once and it was just shitty handheld cam recordings of their drive to the show and a bunch of people standing around struggling to play their instruments
with crescendos once every 10-15 for contrast, but nonetheless it was MASSIVELY uninspiring "
I've seen them live and confirm this was definitely not my experience. The place was packed and it was amazing. They were not too loud but definitely not too quiet
Openers were a pretty noisy punk band called "The Hand" and some drone artist called KGD (who apparently is a member of Godspeed?). They were both quite good.

When I saw them the crowd was mostly students who had clearly not heard them before. People started cheering like a third into the song, thinking it was over. This happened several times.
Anyway, on Moya some absolute legend got annoyed and shouted out "ITS NOT FUCKING FINISHED YET, DICKHEADS".

The comment about GY!BE making music too simple would be more warranted if they didn't have any works of Beethoven at a 5 rating or Chopin at a 4.5. The last time I thought more complexity in music = better music was before I knew what masturbation was.
I'm not trying to fan flames, I wish I could enjoy classical music to the degree J() does. I've just been in the mindset that if I don't enjoy an artist I take a step back and let those who enjoy it enjoy it. Invariably, however, so many threads on this site now are sifting through contrarian opinions like I'm on a political YT comment thread.
This comment isn't helping anything. I might just like simple music sometimes ¯_(ツ)_/¯

"so many threads on this site now are sifting through contrarian opinions like I'm on a political YT comment thread."
It's always been this way tbh (at least as far back as I remember), but the YouTube comparison is definitely a sound one. This site isn't used for discussion much but rather just for proclamation of opinion, sadly.

Duuuude i saw mozart in like 2015 at the colony in woodstock, HOLD MY BALLS shit was so good and complex, mozart was a douche after the show though, wouldnt sign my girls copy of the magic flute, still an awesome show, way better than those pretentious, four chord playing godspeed kids

To be fair, Alex said GYBE are at their best when they are as simple as possible.

That is a very good question. But I guess it's also understandable that you'd have to be in the mood for drawn-out atmospheric crescendo-core. Not something I could put on anytime.
