@Assemblage though--TBH, the example you gave of introducing your mother to Tool and her loving it, is an exception that wouldn't even personally come to mind, given that we all are registered active members of a music fan site. Someone like your mum, would indeed be the ideal candidate to completely come to Tool without the prejudices inherent with them (and enjoy it for many of the reasons I did way back in my spotty teen years--knotty, proggy musicianship, unusually melodic singing oddly juxtaposed with how heavy everything else is--this being the difference to the aforementioned ISIS, whose singer is a greater barrier to entry).
Point being that nowadays it takes someone so far removed from the scene to ever come to this so open. Again, this being a music geek site, you'd have to go a long way to find someone who can approach a group this big and storied without any affecting preconception. Here, it would be the equivalent of living under a rock.
