Amusingly the vox are actually really good on this, if you want to pick out some metal albums with bad vox, this isn't one of them.

Prefer rabid drill sergeant Phil delivery to stoner Phil, I can hear him trying, really really reaching on this - too much I guess
Decent album though, just a bit bland round the edges

“He could on Cowboys“
Agreed he used to be quite a capable singer in his early Pantera days. Before smoking and drugs destroyed his ability to hit high notes... Still love his vocals though.

Devin Townsend has quite an obnoxious singing voice too - does that complete the perfect hat trick?

This is actually true, even if oddly it doesn't really negatively taint his music for me.

True, I actually quite enjoy some of Dev's projects and his vox are nearly always at least acceptable. More than a hint of pomposity in the mix though.
At this point I'm just taking the piss, though the truth is even back in '95 I was never that in love with this. 99 out of 100 times I'd spin Pantera, Clutch or Kyuss ahead of Down.
You'd have to 100% love this guitar sound and style of riff to rate this high....because most of the album follows the exact same formula. Saying that, 'Jail' is actually quite decent as the odd one out.
