Agalloch has elements of post metal sprinkled in but yeah they definitely aren't straight up post metal.

Yea

People who try to fit Agalloch under a single genre label are pretty much doomed to fail anyway

Godflesh were essential to the development of post metal but yea they don't really fit

Neurosis was where the genre really started

well, sure, it's not post metal as we know it today but it was instrumental in the development of the genre as ocean pointed out. it's also very sludgy and aims to create a certain atmosphere so i don't see why they shouldn't be considered as post metal

Arturma - if I am gonna genre tag Godflesh, post metal is about 5th on the list. They have elements I agree.

Is that sarcasm? I thought it was a good explanation. They have post metal intricacies, but to classify them as post metal is just plain wrong. They are one of the few bands I'm pretty sure had a tag made specific for them - Relinquished said it - industrial sludge metal.

Streetcleaner was 19 year old Broadrick completely enamored with Swans, Eric B beats, anything heavier than Napalm Death, and the noise rock/punk/industrial scenes of the time. It sounds sludgey cuz it is, though the sludge of the time was bands ripping off the Melvins and Black Flag hard. Sludge "as we know it today" very shortly came after. the thing is Neurosis had unique influences and ideas thrown in the mix that made TSIB legendary. Streetcleaner isn't post-metal cuz the atmosphere you talk about is a nauseating and disorienting as the harsh industrial shit Broadrick was consuming.
