I cant remember if it was a shout out on here or somewhere else along the lines of 'Theres enough in this to keep old Tool fans happy and enough in it to keep Tool haters hating' or something
I cant stant the word 'hater' it does my head in. It so easy to throw at anyone who just doesnt like something or share the same opinion. I for sure dont hate Tool I just dont particularly like them either. But I can see, as that statement said, how people who like Tool would still like/love this. Sometimes when bands make a 'comeback' after such a long period of time im just happy with a solid comeback that doesnt show up their past. Still, I am baffled by talks of 'a masterpiece' but....subjectivity,relative and and all that....

@SitarHero, surely originality is a virtue we tend to appreciate in music. Not the only virtue, but definitely one of them. It's not hard to understand why someone might be less inclined to invest in an album that they do not perceive to score highly in that virtue.

For sure I don't hate this but it's really hard to tell if this is a legitimate attempt at creating ambiance or if they just don't have any true idea left and need to resort to longwinded recycling. There really is no point in listening to 80 minutes of this when Aenima did the same things more concisely.

My original statement was more aimed at JS19's sweeping statement that there is "literally no reason to listen to this album" when there are things out there that don't sound like any of Tool's previous albums, which, as is implied, makes it more listenable than this.
I definitely agree about originality being a virtue in music and that to some degree this album lacks in the originality department. That being said, it's warranted repeated listens from me in a way that 10,000 Days never did (and still doesn't). I just think it's a shame to write off an album merely because it sounds familiar, but to each their own.

Honestly this album is pretty much nothing like 10K so as the follow up to that album I don’t get the samey complaints. It’s most similar to Lateralus but even that had more traditional rock roots where as here they’re going for more of a post thing structurally. 7empest is more rock oriented but even that is quite different structurally from what they’ve done before. For people who complained that 10K was a poor follow up to Lateralus I’d say this should be more satisfying. I’m withholding 0.5 because age has defeated Maynard, but the music is good enough even with his sparse usage, unlike the recent APC album since that band was carried by his vocals to a greater extent.

I think the sameyness complaints are comparing this album to Lateralus and not 10K.
But that being said, Adam Jones' guitar playing is on another level on this album, 7empest in particular.

Undertow is awesome. Glad we got that straightforward side earlier in their career.

The problem with this album is there's no suspense. There's no tension. If oyou listen to a song like ''Schism'' from Lateralus, it has tension, suspense, and atmosphere. This album just repeats a lot of similar sounding riffs, and very little in the way of production (as far as extra sounds in the background/interesting textures) this album is stripped down by Tool's standards which wasn't a good way to go in my opinion after all this time.
With 80 minutes of music, there should be more lulls in the songs, more dynamics, suspense. They used to be masters of suspense. The songs felt like they had intent. This album just meanders and ''jams'' which hinders it.
I think I'd give it a 3.5 or so.
Even 10,000 days had suspense and ''gravitas''; songs like ''Right in Two'' had a huge feel to them. None of that is found here, though.

I liked Fantano in 2009-2010 when he reviewed interesting music. Now he mostly caters to what's popular and reviews that stuff to keep his business going. I understand it, but his older videos had this cool charm to them. When he was reviewing stuff like Women, and noise bands.
I used to troll him with comments in 2010 and once he commented on my YT channel telling me to not be so ''nasty and rude'' and told me to have a nice day and to ''Eat some food I like and enjoy my day.''
Odd guy.
