I've listened to it a fair bit, maybe not quite 20 times though yet. I also took a break & when I returned it was actually less impactful than before, felt my attention waning. Never been bored listening to these guys before, it's slightly disconcerting.

...by the way I've changed my rating once since this came out, started at 3.5.

fair enough...i just think its a very low rating in the whole metal perspective...there is some pretty good tracks in this...with some technical brilliance moments. The hype was high and now there's the "couterhype" phenomenon.

I just rate something based on how much I enjoy it, simple. Could my disappointment & therefore enjoyment (or lack thereof) stem from those initial high expectations? Sure but I don't have control over that.

I love Converge & it's impossible to rate this as though it isn't a Converge album. I try but my subconscious knows, regardless of how much I attempt to ignore it.

My hype was through the fucking roof. Eve, Pain and Under Duress just increased my hype to even more ridiculous levels. Then I heard the album and not a single track lived up to Pain or Under Duress IMO and those tracks couldn't even compete with Eve. Everything felt neutered and tame in comparison to literally everything else they've ever released.

it's impossible for me not to enjoy Reptilian, Arkiphov calm, Broken By light and so on...and even Trigger, that people are bashing about on here...for me its pretty cool concept song, for sure different from regular Converge.

@Xing

That's odd, those tracks didn't blow me away (not even Eve) & yet I was still hyped. Arkiphov Calm, Broken by Light & the t/t are all decent. Under Duress might be my least favourite track on this, either that or Miles.

Broken by Light and Arkiphov Calm are solid tracks too, Pain and Duress just gave me major YFM vibes and that's my favorite Converge record, so I was stoked. I strongly dislike the title track though. It sounds like a shitty attempt at a The Haunted song.

I like 5 Converge records more than YFM, not sure if that's relevant or not, just a thought.

No idea who The Haunted are but I think it works, wouldn't get anywhere near my top 50 'Verge tracks but in the context of the album it's enjoyable enough.

I might like the opener more than the t/t actually, seemingly changes over time. For a 'Verge opener it's weak but definitely a solid song nonetheless.

Either way, we both agree that this album is underwhelming

i figured out why, and why they dont play ANY NH songs live anymore

1. they are getting old

2. Bannon's voice is screwed up (he coughs up blood)

3. So that they could do (likely one of their last) album tours and play a set where mostly, jake wasn't as needed for screaming parts, or there were parts he could get away with the crowd singing

4. They just peaked years ago and everyone has to fall off at some point

yeah, it’s concerning that that happens. I believe he’s said that he never learned how to scream “properly.” and while the album performance from bannon is unreal, he can’t do all of that live. and speaking of getting old, my god nate looks OLD haha
