I think the main thing is that losing Lindberg made this 100% the Mikael Akerfeldt experience. Even though Mike has always been the main songwriter, the band always had that moderating influence. Everything after his departure feels too self indulgent.

It's not that it's self-indulgent. It's just not very inspired.

There's not nearly as much focus on seamless transitions and development/polishing of the core melodic ideas. There's a lot more directionless meandering. But that includes watershed, where Akerfeldt at least tried to include some aspects of the classic Opeth sound. Heritage onwards, may as well be a different band.

Sounds like mikael want to create the heaviest organ sound.

Also this song is clearly inspired by ghost.

Has some interesting bits, but I dunno about those hard rock open E riffs or whatever they are. Anyway Ill have to give it some more spins. I really liked the natural flowing sound of Heritage; this seems bit more riff orientated like Pale Communion.
