I mean I have checked a lot of the classics too, so I'm being a bit silly with it (I love Demilich, Gorguts, Immolation, Incantation, some Pestilence etc...). I just think with metal we sometimes get a little protective of the old guard when there's also a lot of newer stuff that has built upon it and made it a lot better imo.
I mean if Artificial Brain released LC in 1991 for example, that would have probably been viewed as superior to a lot of dm releases at the time. Or not. I dunno, it's all opinions at the end of the day.
This album was decent though, probably a solid 3.5.

I know it's all opinions buddy. Just making conversation.
So what modern albums are we thinking are superior to established classics, a la human, altars of Madness, close to a world below, consuming impulse, pierced from within etc?

The genre has definitely had some proggy/tech gems later on but i dont think its necessarily better. I honestly think old MA, suffocation, immolation still mops the floor with pretty much any newer OSDM

Im just curious like how derivative these modern albums are that we are thinking are better than the originators

Yeah I honestly don't think there's THAT many modern death metal bands that even touch the classics, and I really don't think it's nostalgia, it's just songwriting/riffs/etc
Newer shit tends to be more technical and polished, or it's a slightly lesser (but still awesome) version of the old stuff like Horrendous/Blood Incantation/Tomb Mold/Frozen Soul, etc

To be fair, this whole argument was born from Os's love for disso, or rather him preferring that and other subgenres over osdm. Not a lot of that to be found in the 90s, so it would certainly make for a good example of a contemporary movement surpassing the golden era.

Oh yeah, disso bores the ever loving shit out of me compared to OSDM so fair enough lol

Id kinda beg to differ on that Lucca. There is a lot of new, different shit happening that isn't super comparable to the classics stylistically, but is right up there with them in terms of quality of the product. Ulcerate, ad nauseam, artificial brain, obliteration, defeated sanity, and funebrarum are all bands that have released at least 1 album in the "modern era" that I would consider to be at least on par with the classics. That's not even counting the plethora of bands that just consistently release fresh, high-quality material that aren't quite classics current-day
