It's fine but I don't understand why everyone jerks off to it

songs are short, relatively simple and super catchy, but they still go hard af, it totally makes sense this is so popular. check out this video from one of their reunion shows, you couldn't hear the vocalist at all because the crowd screamed each fucking line

But the music is so damn repetitive and homogeneous on this thing. Idk, it just bores the hell out of me

The reason I was referring to "octave metal" was because there's such a repetitive formula going on here (mostly using the two-octave riff-jumping formula as a crutch for the weak songwriting):
-speed metal riff with one singular low note being interchanged with notes in the higher octave
-switch key during the riff once in a while, usually on the 6th of the root note
-add some intense screams, of course
-have a slower variation of the riff during either the chorus or the bridge
-have a good chunk of the album be in the same key on top of all of this
$$$ profit
I guess I enjoy this more as a guilty pleasure than anything

yea I get what you're saying, and I can totally see why someone would find this repetitive, because... well, it is. in the same way Reign in Blood is. I guess my enjoyment of the songs/riffs/melodies/hooks themselves surpasses the lack of substance or atmposphere this has, so even calling it a guilty pleasure makes sense. like the album is just a bunch of hits, and I love it for that. in the end, I think this isn't overrated nor underrated, it's so immediate so the listener will know from the first listen how much he likes it. but it does get a bit too much flak for influencing a whole bunch of average metalcore bands, it's not like they did it on purpose lol. for the time, this was pretty unique.

I can agree with you about the metalcore thing... it's kinda like the situation with Vulgar Display of Power. Just because the album influenced so much nu metal doesn't mean it's a bad album itself
|
| |
Kind of a side note but there isn't a single nu-metal group that I can think of that has as much balls as Pantera, so that also helps

You're right it's actually just bad
