@fuckthatnoise Yeah but still, Outside was a pure sex track essentially, title track was still dark and oppressive, down right depressing. Kiss Land doesn't carry that emotional weight in the same way.

Kiss Land's entire sound is more accessible, the production, and even the subject matter of the songs.
That harsh-sounding synth thing on The Town is accessible? The hazy production on the title track that's reminiscent of many of the tracks on the three mixtapes, that's really that much more accessible? The Portishead sample is accessible too?
Again, the only real tracks on this that i'd consider poppy are Live For and Wanderlust. KL as a whole feels more like Thursday filtered through major-label production.
Although i will agree that this feels a lot less personal, and yeah, it's probably his weakest release. It's still much better than i expected though.
This is the thing I'm missing most. End of Professional is the only thing that comes close.
The second half of Professional is actually my least favorite part on this whole album, aside from maybe Drake's verse on Live For.

I think the problem is that although he was pretty poppy on EoS, it still had really deep, complex production too. On KL the production sounds pretty weak, and so do his vocals.

I feel like we listened to two completely different albums. KL has some of the most intricate instrumentals in his discography, and i'd hardly consider EOS's production "deep". Thursday has probably the deepest production in his discography, and KL is most reminiscent of that, only much brighter sounding.
I think that's the main thing that's gonna make him lose older fans, the fact that this is easily the prettiest-sounding, least sexual, least druggy thing he's done.

Yeah, but Kiss Land is much more in your face about it, Tesfaye admits HE went wrong, his fault. On
the mixtapes he was mainly ambiguous, not necessarily so open.
The title track is about the only track along with LITS that is a throwback to the mixtapes imo. Every
song has taken it down a notch, Belong to The World is a pop song at heart, the Portishead sample
doesn't immediately make it inaccessible.
I personally enjoy Kiss Land.

EoS wasn't as deep and druggy as his previous stuff, I'll give you that (apart from The Fall and Initiation), but it was still really engaging. It's depth was more in that it held up on its own rather than as a backing to the vocals.
KL is intricate but that doesn't make it deep. I want my drug tunes. It feels like it's tiptoeing about, trying to be pretty but not really getting anywhere. I keep begging for something like The Fall's bass motif or What You Need's reverb or just that haze all over Thursday.
This sounds so much more homogeneous as well. Everything manages to kinda blend it.
Very disappointing. Though I can't say I'm surprised.

this is a really big point. The mixtapes were all about the emotions, chanelled through The Weeknd's
disembodied voice. The anxiety, the desire, all that was the focus and the heart. Kiss Land is all
about Abel.

Agree fish. - Three key aspects made the mixtapes (to me anyway)- Emotion, Song-writing and Production. Kiss Land has been stream-lined in every aspect. That's what it comes down to. A lot of people won't like it and some will love it.
Kiss Land is a strong 3/3.5. It achieved what he wanted to but in terms of his past work, it just isn't the same caliber. Kiss Land could of been 'different' but still kept the intensity of those aspects.

I disagree with y'all
only had one listen and I recognize a (partial) departure from the druggy haze of some of his previous, but that was expected, obviously
I think the transition is graceful, it feels very organic, especially on highlights like Belong to the World and Wanderlust (that Pharrell remix is so good too) - he's much more the focus here as opposed to some anonymous sleazebag, but it's still interesting and engaging, the songwriting is still very interesting, and the aesthetic is still deep and entrancing throughout
it should be noted that I was more about the 'music' than simply being entranced by the whole 'theme' of his music like some people were (which I think is a silly reason to be into the weeknd but whatever)
either way, he's probably one of the most consistently awesome artists of the past few years in my eyes
amazing that this leaked right alongside Tim Hecker who fits that bill just as well

it's one thing to appreciate how the themes intertwine with his music, I just thought that before, opinion of him hinged too much on his persona and too little on his music and (obviously it's very early but) I think that that's what'll happen with KL

thing with the mixtapes was he didn't really have a persona come through. it was all these intense
disembodied,emotions, and that came out through the music, the lyrics and the theme
KL is all about Abel Tesfaye. And the songwriting is nowhere near as good, in neither production nor
melodies.
