IMO there are little to no BS points on this album. There are a lot more on Colors.

there's some BS in the middle of Fossil Genera (but the lyrics help) and about 3 minutes of it in swim to the moon

The beginning of Fossil Genera was stolen right from Mr. Bungle's California.

I knew I heard that somewhere else before.

After a couple months I have to change my score from a 4 to a 3.5. Musically and technically speaking this album is pretty incredible. The vocals really bring the band down.... they just sound weak and distracting not to mention juvenile. Vocals are just too rough to give this a 4.

His clean vocals are fine for this type of music though, comment is regarding his harsh vocals.

'Desert of Song' is a really strange composition. I love how they can do a Bb - A major - Dm - A minor chorus progression in a song that was previously in E major (or G major, depending on the time). It's the most schizophrenic chord scheme ever, but you wouldn't know that just by listening.

It's a really simple song, anybody with a grasp of open chords should go ahead and try it for compositional sake alone... I know they're not the first band to use weird chord progressions (obviously), but it's really interesting to hear how such unorthodox arrangements in something that's deliberately melodic works.

I guess Opeth has been doing that with their acoustic parts for years though, nevermind.

I could go on the pages! BTBAMtering. Bantering in a BTBAM thread. Hah.

I just appreciate the approach of this album so much. Agghhh.

Fossil is actually probably the weakest song on the album. It's still good though, it's just a tiny bit

boring in the center and gratingly silly in the beginning. I mean, the introduction is fun for the first

8 bars or so, but it definitely doesn't deserve 3.5 minutes of the song. Starting from 4:18 (nice

little synth), the song takes on that droning guitar riff and distinctive/surprisingly effective vocal

line ("we have come to tell you all that we could've prepared for this!") and the song basically

is a string of aptly decent heavy parts. The "we are the new government" segment is also really

fantastic - beyond that, I really don't think I have to argue about the ending of the song. Tommy

sounds fantastic and much less bored with his vocals than ever, the progression is innovative and

sour, the solo is tasteful and the entire band practices an impeccable amount of restraint. I think

it's without question the band's best "clean" section.

I was reading the lyric booklet along with the song the other day and it helped a bit. The lyrics

aren't very good, but the concept carries the song more than I would've initially thought. I really

think that the three distinct segments of the song perfectly match the lyrical intonation.

Just rantin' here, fromtheinside

Their music in general would be better with a vocalist who doesn't sound like he's dry heaving all the time.

I've never said this before in spite of how big a topic it is, I do not mind the vocals in BTBAM.

Is it me or does the part at 4:18 in "Fossil Genera" have the same chord changes as the end

segment?

Absolutely, just that the progression moves at a much faster pace obviously. Continuity is an awesome thing, makes the songs much more complete.

BTBAM.

Liking Tommy's vocals or not is really just a preference of tone. He no longer sounds thin, he can do it live (if not better) and his clean vocals finally sound like he enjoys what he's doing (vindicate me, he sounds so damn bored on

Colors). At this point, it boils down to whether or not you like the sound of his voice, or scream, rather - and most people really hate it, haha. To each their own, I'm quite fond.

Nuts to this, I LOVE IT.

Goes well with the rest of the band.

His cleans sound great now but his harsh vocals have always sounded like a combination of pig squeals and Alex Varkatzas.
