many disappointments arise from unmet expectations with this release because aphex' fanbase is oversaturated with people who aren't typically avid electronic music listeners (result of his successful influencer lifestyle outside of music production as I've previously mentioned). sure, one could argue that gaining such a huge following outside of your niche is a legendary feat in itself. but this LP is full with what I'd say is a lack of focus on many tracks.
all in all, it's good stuff, it vibes hard, it's highly innovative- being maybe the first display of what we think of as modern electronica, but that doesn't equate it with being objectively the greatest music the genre has to offer. it has its merits for being canonized, but what came up from autechre, global communication, orbital and squarepusher only a couple of years later is so much better than this it's hard to argue in its favour hehe

"xtal" hits tho

Love Orbital. Autechre can be a chore, but I appreciate it. Checking some Global Communication soon. Can't recall much of Squarepusher.

Funny you mention his fan base, because I know a dude who's not too big into Electronica and he mentioned he's a fan of Aphex.

Yeah this seemed waaaay more remarkable when I first heard it. However I still dig most of his stuff and I appreciate how this (amongst a few others) helped introduce me to a different world of music.
I imagine hearing this (for the first time) as an already experienced electronic music listener isn’t going to be anywhere near as rewarding.

Pretty unremarkable considering its high status. And yea, an affluent electronic listener isn't going to be moved much. Maybe that's just the hands of time. It feels dated. But it is great for what it is. I can see myself coming back to it for the vibe.

I'm sure if I heard this for the first time decades ago it would've been shapeshifting. And I keep that in mind. But it isn't now.

Yes, and it's great... no doubt. Definitely not timeless, though.

Maybe timeless in influence. Not in listen-ability.
