Hero Of The Day is the only redeemable track off of Load for me, the rest is just Southern Rock branded as Metallica.

That's off Reload, still not a fan. Let me put it this way when it comes to Load and Reload: I think even the track Invisible Kid is still better than any track off of Load and Reload, that's how dogshit I think those albums are. When I think Metallica I think Thrash Metal--I get more captivation off of a song like Invisible Kid than Load and Reload combined.

The Outlaw Torn has one of the sickest grooves and I loved hearing them noodle on in a less "in your face" style for 10 minutes. It's different. It's not expected, but it really works for what it is. It's the natural progression from The Black Album's vibe.
There's probably a 4-4.5/5 album you can make of the best cuts from Load and Reload. That's the biggest problem - too much bloat. And that's a problem that's persisted ever since too.

Aight lemme compile a rough list of what could make Load and Reload a really good album on it's own.
Ain't My Bitch
Fuel
The Memory Remains
Until It Sleeps
King Nothing
The Unforgiven II
Hero of the Day
Bleeding Me
Where the Wild Things Are
Ronnie
The Outlaw Torn (Unencumbered Version)

I just think the worst of Metallica's 'in your face' is better than Metallica's best 'relaxed'. The number one factor for this is Lars's drumming; everyone loves to point out the drum sounds in St. Anger, but at least his actual drumming didn't sound like a session drummer for an entire album like on Load and Reload.

I'll give you that the drumming isn't super complex but it didn't need to be. He did what suited the style.
Although when it comes to THIS era, Megadeth definitely had Metallica beat in the 90s. Yes even Risk.

Yeah Megadeth definitely beats Metallica in the 90s for sure.

It definitely helps that the 90s Megadeth albums weren't nearly as long - but even then, I honestly have a lot more nostalgia for when I used to jam Youthanasia and parts of Cryptic Writings as a kid.

I gave this another spin again after probably 15 years or so just to confirm what I remember from it. Holy hell, I did not remember James' vocals being this unlistenable. At the time, all the fuss was about the sound of the drums, but I'll take any wacky percussion noise over vocals that sound so cheesy and goofy that it could convince anyone that this is self-parody.

lars's performance on st anger is actually pretty solid. if you watch the live in studio videos, lars is full of energy, way more than he did in the load/reload years

Yeah the drums are fine, especially compared to the singing.
