IMO, this album has the band at their very best and very worst (a bit like Metallica with 'Hardwired...'). Overall, I prefer it to '10,000 Days', due to the fact that while that album was way more consistent, it doesn't come near the highs of this one.

Where even are the heights in this one? The FI melody? The riff in Tempest? Idk, for me this one's a big ole meandering mole hill of tool-esque ideas wrapped very loosely with a Maynard vocal bow.

"Where even are the heights in this one?"

Well, personal taste really, innit?

Massively dig the title track, 'Pneuma', 'Descending' (especially), and '7empest'. Makes up for meandering, half-conceived wank.

Idk, this one just isn't clicking for me like the others. Maybe one day i'll be able to listen to it and believe Maynard didnt phone it in

Album sounds like what a 15 year old discovering Tool in 2015 imagined their next album should sound like

"Maybe one day i'll be able to listen to it and believe Maynard didnt phone it in"

I don't think he phoned it in; I just think he works in an area designed to protect his vocal cords. Certain scream-y songs like 'Ticks and Leeches' do a number on his voice. Plus, it'd be disingenuous from his standpoint, to pretend he's angry in the same way he used to be. He's still got an incredible set of pipes.
