I definitely agree with that Johnny, Windmill is more grounded in "traditional" forms and methods, 5th wave certainly more forward-thinking in its methodology.

polyphia are single-handedly doing better than Windmill and 5th wave emo combined.

Funny coming back to this post new Black Midi…this really sounds like recent Black Midi as covered by Okkervil River to me now
First three songs are really low energy…I wanted to bump this….
Second half of the album is twice as good if I remember

Yeah for me the album doesn’t get going until the second half of ‘Bread Song’, get very little before that.

Yeah, so still not a bad album, three very solid good songs definitely, also some ok ones...but, I forgot how one paced/one toned this is. Now that's great when you absolutely love the style landed on but when not totally sold you can enter slogville, and returning to this was a bit of a slog which surprised me (usually you have the 'oh, I remember that part, I've missed you' factor, a bit of nostalgia too maybe).
The end of 'Basketball Shoes' is still the best part of the album - in fact I'd say that's the one song to go up in my estimations since the break in listening, best tune on the album (most dynamic) for me. 'Inserted the Blade' came down the most.
1. Basketball Shoes [4] (not perfect but the good is v good)
2. Snow Globes [4]
3. Haldern [4] (should be instrumental)
4. Bread Song [3.5] (gets good)
5. The Place Where [3.5] (find it too twee now)
6. Good Will Hunting [3]
7. Concorde [3]
8. Chaos Space Marine [2.5]
Album still sits between a 2.5 and a 3 for me I guess.

solid-ish ranking actually
'polyphia are single-handedly doing better than Windmill and 5th wave emo combined.'
what? Please tell me this isn't actually true, not that I'm particular invested in either this scene or 5th wave emo (there are 5 waves?)... but yeah, Polyfilla are an abysmal excuse for music in general

I mean half of this is pretty good whatever, just vastly overrated
Much preferred this year's Black Midi even

Well put together with an equal amount of brilliance and arse.
There’s definitely something about it.

It does, I track rate different to album rate - I wouldn't massively seek out to play anything less than a 4 for track ratings. Prob a continuation from star ratings for filtering my music library before I just said 'f'ck it' and started streaming 90% of the time.
A 4 is a song I'd seek out in isolation/outside of listening to the full album. Three is not a high number, so I guess that might explain the 2.5. Also, track ratings for me don't directly impact an album score anyway, an album can be more or less than the sum of its parts.
Then there's the possibility a 2.5 for me might be more a 3 for most I dunno. I call it 'good type of average', the average I can listen to, a 2 is 'bad type of average', stuff that's more actively boring. 1.5 is 'poor'.

i will say, it's interesting to see someone actually consider a 2.5 "average" when most sputnik users consider it "ass"

I'll be giving this one more listen over the next week before putting up lists anyway, I feel this is destined to end up a 3 but last time I just didn't feel it that day.

I'd like to agree that 2.5 is average, it probably is
but then looking at my ratings (for the current year only), my distribution leans more towards a 3, at least in median terms - the mean would certainly be below that due to a lack of any highly-placed scores (peaks at 4/5)
I suppose most of us don't purposefully listen to / rate utter rubbish, so a genuine 'average' of all music in existence would in all likelihood be considerably lower

3 ratings are my most used this year - but I'd like to think there's a skew to at least attempting to try and listen to stuff I might like, hence a 3 doesn't equate to average ;)

I’ve hardly listened to fuck all new music this year.
This, Suede and Marillion. Odds and sods here and there.
