i liked the first single a lot but i understand if it was a bit much for people
this new one though??? one of the wildest songs they've done in a very long time. don't want to overreact but that might be the best track they've dropped since P2 and i say that as a huge fan of the previous three albums.

I like parts, more of them than less, but it’s still not grabbing me as a whole in a way that I want to come back to. They haven’t really done anything that’s grabbed me outside of a few songs here or there since TGM

I saw a bunch of comments saying the new single sounds like circus music so I'm debating whether I should even check it out

BTBAM is just death metal Muse

trying so hard to not fanboy but i couldn't be happier with the two new singles. easy aoty if the rest of the album is relatively near that level.
also think the subtraction of dusty has brought on a nice change of pace from automata/colors 2. feel like there is considerably less focus on riffs and a lot more straight wankery from dan and paul, with quite a bit of both tracks featuring just one guitar. the bass feels elevated to geddy lee levels in the mix + songwriting.
i'm sure many older fans aren't gonna be super big on that pivot in philosophy but i think it's kinda nice to see the formula from the past 7 albums shook up a bit

To me they seem to be going almost completely full prog and ditching the metal, and the prog was never their strong suit imho. Maybe most don’t agree with that
I’m all for weird time signatures and mathy stuff, but a lot of their prog leanings have had too much cheese for me
|
| |
I've enjoyed a good amount of their prog elements but when they crank the zany factor up to 11, I usually tend to hate it and that's how this first new single sounded to me.
I still haven't checked the latest one

I agree and I guess that’s probably what I meant without communicating the nuance lol. I feel a lot of their prog stuff they go for “weird” and when that’s the whole vibe I’m completely uninterested

They've altered their style a fair bit over the course of their career. They are one of my personal favourite bands but I haven't listened to them in quite a while. May have to change that soon and do a discog run.

Stacked upon one another, yet I cannot grip | I cannot grip

I wish BTBAM just went back to the Alaska sound for one more album. Something a little less wonky and more straightforwardly aggressive.

Alaska is their greatest achievement. In terms of their song writing ability, it is easily their best.

Nah I think that's easily The Great Misdirect.
>To me they seem to be going almost completely full prog and ditching the metal
This tells me I don't even need to bother with the new singles. I have literally no evidence for it, but Paul and Tommy, maybe even Dan really seemed to insert themselves straight up their own asses after TGM to me.
