these guys (along with periphery and polyphia) make such niche music yet make a killing off tabs, signature equipment, online lessons, twitch streams of them just practicing etc.
i'm struggling to form a question around that that doesn't come across like i think they're greedy bastards... but it would be cool to hear them speak on how they've monetized their music in such a unique and optimal way, how much or how little that informs their writing process, touring schedule, etc.

oh yeah guys like yngwie and satriani have always existed but i think that crop of bands is particularly interesting/different because each individual member is gaining from it and not just one big name guitarist... of course a lot is gained from the band's name value but even just as individuals they seem to do insanely well. like not just tosin/misha/henson but every single guitarist and bassist in all three of those bands has a signature guitar that sells rather well for instance (tosin even has his own brand of guitars he plays and sells now).
also you could say rush and dream theater and rhcp had a similar kind of cache as "all star virtuoso lineups" but they also built that reputation off decades of relentless touring and world famous hits... these new bands don't have nearly the reach but have found themselves on a similar pedestal amongst guitarists/drummers/bassists/gearheads
its like they aren't only the most skilled musicians, but the most skilled marketers and businessmen on top of it

This one combines the tech noodles they’re famous for with an easy accessibility. They’ve never gotten as close to perfection as this.

On all their albums there is amazing stuff that matches the best on this, but only the debut and this really come together as an album. Songwriting, flow, melodicism is better on this than most of their stuff. I revisited this recently and that futuristic technical genius and unique tone combined with the soul still intact shone through stronger than ever. There is a cold detached quality to some of their material that they managed to transcend on here. It felt like they were on the top of the world when this came out.
