Also I'm really stoned so I just had this thought: Deftones are the San Antonio Spurs of music.

the thing about this album for me is it almost feels like a b-sides album - which is somewhat ironic considering their very next release was the actual b-sides & videos compilation
i wonder if people who were fans when it came out would attest to it even feeling weirdly under-the-radar upon release

that's how I felt about it at the time but I also felt that Minerva blew away White Pony. It was also weird that this was self-titled, which is probably why I forget about it. This album should have been called Minerva.

"fortunately the songs do not sound like they belong on Gore"
production does suck on both tbh

I'm kinda annoyed that they delayed the release for the new one just for the reason, that they can't tour in support of it. Dozens of other (also big) artists have released their regardlessly

you can't really blame them though. they probably want to the tour and the album to land at the same time to boost sales of it and promote their tour.

some can afford to do it and some can’t
a young pop artist like dua lipa can but 5 grown men with families necessarily can not

I don't know, it left a rather bitter taste in my mouth regardless. And if other artists do it, why couldn't they? It's not like album sales are that important anymore, and people are more likely to stream their songs now than ever, and Deftones are the kind of band that will sell out venues even only based on their legacy.
Overall, that argument doesn't really cut it

I think they want the hype to coincide with the corresponding tour and that would be a little lost if the album has had time to settle into the minds of fans, new listeners.

in any case, just be a little patient my man. the album will drop eventually.

I wouldn't be so disappointed if they hadn't pushed it back so often before, it was supposed to come out somewhere in the first half in 2019 first, than autumn/winter of that year, and now even a late 2020 release date seems shakey

Pretty sure I've heard Chino say a couple of times that they heavily rely on touring for their income. I think we tend to forget we live in a Sput bubble sometimes - these guys are huge on here, and a relatively big rock band, but in 2020 that doesn't really mean a lot. I doubt album sales alone do much for them.

touring and album release timing is crucial
more potential for sales when both occur at good timing for the musical consciousness

til they ignore the delays and forget when it’s time to support their band
