Hey, i dont hear it overpowers anything in this record. In fact this production is one of the better metal production I've listened to past 2 years. But it might sound different ofc, some of the players, headphones, etc, has been leaning towards bass and non-flat response EQ, so you might getting this from your equipment (double-bass overpowering all instruments in that range, etc). But I agree, drums are extremely loud these days. People just want too much bass.

The "we get it dude youve got the fastest feet in australia" thing made me laugh pretty hard.
The double bass "wall" is a bit overused here in term of composition, but mix wise I don't think it's too oppressive. When I saw them live it was a different story, though. Definitely overpowered the mix like you're saying.

The most recent album a bit better imo.
The production keeps me from giving it a 5 though. It's too sterile.

Not really, it's just super cheesy and boring. Like this is cheesy too, but it doesn't overdo it and Citadel really, really does.

Citadel is really good, but this is in a whole new level

The first three-song-piece on Citadel is kinda boring compared to this record, the rest is fine

If anything, I think that Citadel is a more concise take of what they did with this album albeit with more clean vocals and less experimentation. My only real criticism of it is the production. The double tracked vocals are annoying, and the vocals sound much better live. The drum production is annoying to me as well, but that doesn't take anything away from it since the triggered shite is the norm in contemporary metal. It doesn't excuse it though.

I'll have to agree with Beefshoes on those double-tracked vocals. They really kill the vibe on Painters of the Tempest. I think it's great that the vocalist can do low growls and high shrieks, but both at once in that song comes off as super forced and distracting.

Listen to this live performance and compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGqwORzfKQs
It's so good that I'd pay to have a copy without the double tracking.
