I don't really feel the energy as much as I would with other bands.
If the vocals are angry, there needs to be a reason to be angry. I'm sure Keith has his reasons, but I can't look into his past/personal life.

I can think of two reason. A) he is more private than most vocalists so his lyrics deliberately obfuscate what is going on in his life. B) the lyrics aren't necessarily mean to be taken completely seriously, but also humorously.
