truth be told I've listened to way more obscure random newer dm than a lot of stuff from the classics. probably because when I started listening to dm I thought a lot of the classics were kinda meh and I just never really bothered going back now that I'm more well-versed in the genre.

Tbf i didnt dig MA a lot for the first few years of being into dm. They were good but like you, they were not something i often wanted to jam. That has changed now tho, love these guys

like I'm sure this album slayed in the 90s, but I'd be willing to bet that there are heaps of modern dm albums that kinda destroys it. I know it's heresy to piss on the classics, but the genre is all about heresy so...

I mean I listen to mostly death metal, and of course there are classics of every decade but I honestly don’t think you’ll find that many modern death metal bands (outside of a handful) that come close to the song writing/genuine atmosphere of records like this one. Newer doesn’t mean more authentic

I never claimed that newer means more authentic. There is no shortage of modern dm that is both genuine and atmospheric imo, so not sure that is true either. That being said, this is sounding pretty sweet so far.

By choosing to ignore the classics you'll miss out on some essential riffs, because any newer band worth their salt will avoid carbon-copying them like the plague. The basics are the basics and universally beloved for a reason. It's not just all nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses.

That's not to say that there isn't great modern dm, because there is. But if u don't know the history of riffs (death, incantation, immolation, suffocation, gorguts, morbid angel, pestilence etc) you're not really getting accurate context when u listen to new shit. U might hear a gatecreeper or frozen soul album and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but if u didn't hear who did the sound first in the 90s, you're missing out by and large.
And os i love u and this is not meant as a jab, but saying "there are probably heaps of modern dm that destroys morbid angel" isn't just probably very inaccurate, it's downright silly

"There is no shortage of modern dm that is both genuine and atmospheric imo, so not sure that is true either."
I didn't say there was a shortage of newer death metal that is genuine or atmospheric, I love a lot of modern death metal and have even handed out my share of 5's for some modern classics...(though to be fair, I do think the songwriting of early MA, Suffocation, Death, Cryptopsy, etc is some of the strongest in the genre)
But you did say "I'm sure this slayed in the 90's, but I'd be willing to bet that there are heaps of modern dm albums that kind of destroy this"
And I was basically just saying "nahhhh" lol
It slayed in the 90's and it still slays now, because no matter how much better production gets or how many bands took this influence and ran with it, you still can't touch this *que MC Hammer*
