Yeah same. I was big into melodeath when I first heard this too and I found it lackluster compared to some others, e.g. The Gallery. This one did grow on me a bit over the years, but whenever I want some ATG I usually just go for their earlier records.

As far as it having the highest average goes, I just think it's due to mass appeal. It's still good, but not as creative as a lot of their other stuff.

I imagine it was probably more impressive when this first came out

Agreed. Also Slaughter is way more accessible in its approach, whereas their early records are a lot more technical and dissonant, and it usually takes a few listens for you to take everything in. I think a lot of people dismiss those records based on one casual listen because a lot of the negative reviews I've seen for those ones call them "too chaotic" and/or "too disjointed". I highly doubt those people listened to those albums more than once.

Yeah those are dumb complaints because their earlier albums are fucking tremendous

The Red In The Sky is Ours really got me into these guys

I was not well versed in DM AT ALL (still not really) & I love Red Sky, it was intriguing after a couple of listens but that connection just kept on growing. Better than any of my brief forays with melodeath even though it’s supposed to be more ‘accessible’.
It just goes to show everyone works differently & there are no set rules.

Agreed. And yeah those reviews were dumb, The Red in the Sky... is extremely well composed, certainly not disjointed. Same can be said for With Fear I Kiss... Although that one took me longer to get into, not really sure why. I dug Red Sky when I first heard it, much moreso than Slaughter, but it took me quite a few spins before I began to appreciate With Fear.
Demon, just curious, what all melodeath have you heard? You ever check Eucharist or Hypocrite? You'd probably dig them, they're closer to early ATG in style than something like say, In Flames or Dark Tranquillity.

For sure. Disjointed my ass. Dude is just a snob with no ear for metal.

Album is so good I can't listen to it every day for fear of it losing its edge after repeat listens. I think it's THAT good haha

OCTAVE METAL
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.2
Octave metal: a term to describe metal bands who constantly switch octaves in their riffs to give the illusion of depth and meaning, even when their music is shallow and best heard at surface level.
Also applies to countless melodic metalcore bands that At the Gates influenced with this album
