Hey Desolator, what do you mean you want to like it like a 5? I think people feel pressured sometimes that they have to like something because of peer pressure. It's a bandwagon that gathers momentum as some critics band together and the hype machine goes into overdrive. This has been very dominant in the 2000s and there have been far too many instances of 'the emperor's new clothes'.

Anyway this album, I would have to agree with a few brave others here who are brave enough to stick their heads up and speak out, is overrated. Best tracks maybe Conversation 16 and England.

This group fits into the middle of the road bland style that has been one of the musical styles in existence in America from at least the 70s. The melodies are very smoothed over so won't grab people, the music isn't too challenging or with too much attitude. Ideal for background music I guess, maybe driving along in a car or something.

Someone on a list said to me that the appeal of The National was simple and I should be able to get it. He/she was right the appeal is simple, too damn simple! lol

Oh, well. Less alimony payments for me.

I still can't get around why people love this album so much.
