I don't think I ever told this story, but this album literally broke my ass. When it dropped in 2008 I went on a hike at night to jam it, and I wound up listening to it 3 times in a row in a secluded park while swinging on a swingset. It was a fantastic time. I wake up the next day and my ass cheeks are just destroyed. Pulled pork. Couldn't move for like 2 days.
Good times

Ok let me further expound.
My father (who I now despise for reasons I will not elaborate on here. let's just leave it at he's a genuine horrible person... so yeah there's your laugh nerds, at my "daddy issues") was a huge metalhead. I was introduced to the 80s thrash and 90s stuff, and stuff like White Zombie/Rob Zombie and Linkin Park as well. I was acclimated to, in particular, And Justice for All, Ride the Lightning, and the Black Album.
I discovered this album existed years later, and was intrigued by its cover art. It was so different to me and I really liked it as a young kid. I remembered putting songs from it on mix CDs for years, and I'd always like it more than my family did.
See, back then was a simpler time. The heaviest thing I even knew was Pantera. But even then I really didn't care beyond listening to them in my dad's truck. I feel like even as a young kid I was drawn to the emotions more. St. Anger intrigued me not because it went harder, but because it was different. it felt like i was listening to a band that was just letting it all out. I didn't care if the songwriting was "bad" it felt HONEST.
