I mean, I tailored my playlist to Davil's request, so mine is automatically more helpful, so I consider myself still raised... if that's how language works.

But, my retrospective mixtape would look pretty damn similar, except, you know, your weird love for Elephant In the Dock. The song is great poetry though - I get it.

haha I know I'm just busting your chops

Elephant in the Dock is among the most important songs Weiss has penned, and it pains me that more people on this site don't appreciate it for the classic track that it is

Because the refrain is weak - Sowing!

The best penned on the album and the worst composed.

what would have been a better refrain though

the way they did it sounds determined yet mournful, as if to symbolize both the angry mob and the narrator who knows what the elephant represents (and the tragedy that its execution would be)

Elephant in the Dock was probably the biggesr grower of Ten Stories for me. Definitely a contender for best of that album.

Well:

1) Let me clarify. It's not a bad song. It works. It's just mewithoutYou is a great band. Most songs they make are great. Elephant in the Dock is not.

2) I think the refrain is a little lazily composed (Hang! The Elephant must hang! * 4), slighly unmelodic, and is mostly just saved by clever guitaring.

3) The composition of the track (verse - refrain - verse - refrain - conclusion) is not nearly as dynamic or inventive as the band's usual standards.

The basic structure of the song invokes the various established motions of a trial for me, but agreed that it's hardly the band's best

Elephant is stunning, it's just that the vocal melody for the chorus is super grating

Thanks for proving both our arguments.

what is it with this crew and all the hate for simple choruses? Elephant in the Dock is one of the best songs on Ten Stories

your opinion for sure, and one you are entitled to

2) I think the refrain is a little lazily composed (Hang! The Elephant must hang! * 4), slighly unmelodic, and is mostly just saved by clever guitaring.

What you refer to as a lazily composed refrain is the "simplistic" and visceral reaction of the mob that just wants to see the Elephant hang because they do not understand it. The basic phrasing is a metaphor for simple minds who rally behind ignorance and numbers to kill off ideas that diverge from what they already believe in. (in essence, "he doesn't speak our language - he must hang!") It's perfect contrast to the Elephant's reflective and thoughtful nature.

3) The composition of the track (verse - refrain - verse - refrain - conclusion) is not nearly as dynamic or inventive as the band's usual standards.

The song is not meant to be particularly dynamic or inventive. It's a lyrical give-and-take between enlightenment and ignorance, hence the back and forth/to-and-fro sway, to which verse-refrain-verse accomplishes its agenda.

I just really love how varied the band is. Seriously if you can think of a sound, they’ve done it

Your point is well argued - I certainly don't disagree with it - but for me there's more to a great song than a well-executed concept. Elephant on the Dock is certainly advanced stuff - it isn't nearly as thoroughly enjoyable as most of mewithoutYou's other stuff though. If a concept hampered mewithoutYou's ability to be dynamic, it hampered the song.

chan, does that include things pre A-B Life? also agreed Fig is the worst song on It's All Crazy but it's still, like, 7/10

Thematically the hysteric but flat tone to Aaron's vocals on the chorus are genius
I just think it sounds annoying unfortunately
