really not sure how anyone could love this album (4.0+) and consider the opener to be one of the weaker songs

Just because someone doesn't think one song on an album they love is amazing, how could they love the whole album? Nobody Else Will Be There isn't even representative of how the overall album sounds. If anything, it's a bridge from TWFM that segues the listener into the main identity of SWB. It's a great song, but I agree with the people who don't count it among the best on here.

How can anyone not dig ‘The System...’.

Tracks 6-8 are still a bit...off, that’s the weakness with this

Softening, but not streamlining. Instrumentation is a bit more out there than TWFM, but it’s still reminiscent of that album’s size/elegance. A lot less bleak this time around tho, more sweet.. even cute at times

Also, y’all catch the music vid for I’ll Still Destroy You yet??

Appearances can be deceiving haha Nobody Else Will Be There is like “come meet me over here, because nobody else will be there.” That feeling of needing to be alone w someone yknow? And in I’ll Still Destroy You he actually says that line with a wink more than anything. Classic Berninger.

For sure, he has a unique gift for anticipating the thoughts of the listener

cyliner makes some really good observations on this page. Going off his points, I find this to be their most playful and unpredictable; it has a few high energy rock songs, at least in the first half, then more rhythmic, experimental/electronic songs in the second, alternating with sweet, melancholic ballads throughout.

yea the new video is great

this joint is still one of my least fav National albums, I just cant see myself wanting to listen to this over any of their other great albums, let alone clossics.

They played like 8 songs last night off of this, Day I Die is a banger live.

@Talons

Most definitely, and somehow it’s still unmistakably The National. They’re getting older but now they feel even more ‘with it’ than ever
