It doesn't have anything their best albums have. There's no nuance, no creativity or variety, nothing catchy, the nostalgia factor is like the only thing there but even then that pales in comparison. Look at a body of work like music has the right, with all its intricacies and layers upon layers of content and then compare it to this and this sounds like a nondescript meandering ambient album

and most importantly, no rare vinyl release

i don't think they were intending this album to be 'catchy' -- it's doomy and concerned

damn i gotta say i disagree with pretty much everything you just typed lmao.
its the only BoC album that feels current. all their other material has this kind of idyllic, detached nostalgia that just kind of makes you feel warm and maybe a bit melancholy at times.
this record is terrifying. nothing is real sounds like the soundtrack to watching nuclear ash fall from the skies while the earth is on fire. it's an emotional register they havent touched in anything else they did and thats why it's my favorite, even if i think mhtrtc and geo are technically better.

im upset that i spent money on this on vinyl when i could have bought MHTRTC
I have Geo already

When I say catchy I don't mean it has to be poppy and upbeat, just memorable. Geogaddi is doomy and concerned too but I can name several memorable moments whereas I struggle to think of more than 2 or 3 here.
Hype: that description of nothing is real is so baffling to me haha - that's like the only lighthearted and happy-sounding song on the album imo. It's easily the best thing here too

I liked it... very cinematic nostalgic post-apocalyptic ambient techno
and the gatefold is pretty nice, rare or not... cool collection of photographs on the inside of the gatefold and on the inserts as well

we need honkpilled techno

"its the only BoC album that feels current."
the other ones feel current whenever i do drugs. this one feels current when life sucks dick and the city bleakness makes me want to shoot myself in the face
|
| |
i dunno about that its pretty monotonous and i wouldn't call it creative compared to their other stuff either
|
| |
"it is unlike anything they ever did before and simultaneously sounds like boc"
how is this unlike anything they did before its the same shit just without any joy
|
| |
maybe, but that doesn't make it sound any different
|
| |
though i dont agree about it being disproportionately terrifying either. geogaddi to me is terrifying / haunting in a certain way. even moments of mhtrtc are haunting and unnerving. they are like psychedelics in that way where at any moment they could cross the threshold between enlightening and overwhelming. this is just depressive. its boc beats without any of the wonder or spiritualism.
|
| |
"I'm not sure I understand what you mean?? like yes it still sounds like BoC tracks and their production approach is not hugely different, but that's like saying that campfire and music has the right don't sound different??"
well i certainly wouldnt say it's unlike anything theyve done before
|
| |
the notion of putting this on any sort of pedestal within the context of their discog triggers me tho, i think this is probably my least favourite 3/5 album of all time, it makes me feel betrayed
|
| |
you could feel the sky and the color of fire are both scarier than this entire album combined and in a super visceral and enigmatic kind of way
this is scary maybe in an anxiety ridden kind of "hope i dont get shanked behind this dumpster" kind of way

"see here you're agreeing with me in a way, and obviously I think that geo and Music and on certain tracks campfire are totally unnerving and haunting. it's just that you personally don't enjoy the depressive atmosphere on this album. which is exactly what they were going for and why I think it's so cool. but there are moments of hope that glimmer here that imo aren't as audible if you're listening to the thing expecting or wishing it to be more like the stuff they released before. at least that's the reason I couldn't hear them at first"
i have no problem with depressive atmospheres in general so it's not quite that simple. this argument is kind of a "well it's supposed to be like this so therefore it good" kind of thing that i'm not buying. it's flat out unenjoyable for me, and it's not just because it isn't like stuff they released before. campfire is also an outlier in tone compared to mhtrtc this and geo too but i still love that one.
i have to 3 it because its still better than any of their emulators from a technical perspective. like if nothing else by boc existed i wouldn't hate it the way i do. if it wasn't boc i could maybe 3.5 it, but since its boc, i almost want to 2.5 it

maybe it would be more appealing to me if i didn't grow up in a cold ass bleak grey city like this album is literally "calgary winter the album" like biiiiiitch no thanks
