Recently got into Rush, listened to this, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures so far. Loving it, such a great band. I'm Canadian but i've lived in the UK since i was 10 and my friends always used to make fun of me and say all Canada has is shit bands like Nickleback, well now I've found these guys.

@clay
well i believe you've got the best bad on the planet hailing from Canada. Their entire discography is terrific in so many different ways. Dissect and digest it slowly.

Leaps and bounds ahead of 2112. This album saved rushed from being another shitty forgettable Canadian band.
This album is the bridge in Rush's catalog, being a mix of Sci-fi spacey prog and more straightforward rock. The title track already shows more focus and an improvement in songwriting over 2112.
Xanadu is easily the peak of this album and one of Rush's best. Brilliant riffing by Lifeson, insane drumming, a great vocal performance, solid lyrics, and tasteful synth.
Cinderlla Man is another solid track that has one of Geddy's best bass lines. The guitar solo also rules.
Now the problem with A Farewell To Kings is that the rest of the songs are not of the same calibre. Closer To The Heart is a tame radio-friendly number. Musically it's passable, but the lyrics are so fucking cheesy. Madrigal is a snoozer track that is just filler and could have been left off. Cygnus X-1 is another prog number but it's not even close to being on the same level as Xanadu. The only redeeming quality is the drumming towards the end of the song.
If the rest of the songs were as tight and technically impressive as Xanadu this would be a better album.
