Agree Titan, about the Opeth stuff, all I heard was how great they are, heard one album, cant remember what it was, after 2 songs got bored, if was not good at all.

they do have some incredible songs, but as an album listener, they are dreadful to get through

A lot of Opeth albums drag like a bitch yeah. MAYH doesn't drag at all though, that's one of the things that makes it stand out so far from the rest of their discography.

Opeth is one of the most overrated metal bands ever.

There's a lot of metal bands I'd say are more overrated.

starless, I hope you are not referring to vol. 4 when you say Opeth has made better album than this.

Jamie, why do you like them, trying to figure them out?

and yes I like "albums". one of the great achievements, and what I like best about the bands I like is putting songs together to make a statement, whatever that statement is, can't dig bands that put fluff around 2 good songs

I'm not the biggest Opeth fan myself but I am a huge fan of My Arms Your Hears which for me is just the perfect blend of death metal and atmospheric beauty. Everything about that album feels right, even down to the raw, muddy production which suits the album perfectly.

They also have some really great moments outside of that album and for me very few bands do the whole death metal mixed with acoustic passages (early era) and/or prog influences (later era) as well as Opeth, even though they're far from faultless and did do their formula to death (but you could say that about a lot of metal bands who stuck to a winning formula).

Agreed hard with Titan.

Also I'm a DM noob but is the death metal + acoustic a sound that many bands use really?

Yeah, mate, none do it as well as Opeth though. But out of the many that do I personally wouldn't say they're typical DM bands. You don't get harsh grunt style bands like Morbid Angel doing it.

Burden sucks.

Also, for those who get sick of the death metal vocals maybe it's more a case of death metal (vocals) not being your thing rather than Opeth being overrated, just saying.
