I was told that mark hollis made subpar synthpop music because he wanted to be a musician as a career, which often meant that he needed to appeal to large audiences and producers. But as time went on, he was able to net more and more creative freedom. The spirit of eden is when things really took off, in terms of the style and approach to the music.

Colour of Spring is where things reallly took off I'd posit, with SoE actually being the growing pains album they learned from to create this, where Hollis practically gave birth to every note

Spirit of Eden is superb however, this is STILL miles ahead of it. Laughing Stock is an untouchable work of art.

I refuse to believe that the sonic landscape of this album isn't a real place

It might have been a few hundred years ago. I don't think such isolation exists anymore.

They recorded this and what came before it in a desolate plain surrounded by birds. Many centuries ago.

I think Spirit Eden just beats this. Although the krautrock influence here is awesome and New Grass is their best.

This is my first time listen score so don't get mad. This requires more listens to digest for sure. Taphead was my favorite song so far.

that violin lick just annihilates me, and the way the musical build-up forces itself begrudgingly up to that sublime double-bass phrase... yeah perfect
