Well, this was the first Porcupine Tree album that really started to bore me.

No wonder why they entered hiatus shortly after.

Ok despite being in prog for over a decade I never really dived into them except literally like 2 random tracks which I liked. This appears to be the most popular album, but is it the best starting point?

@ Fowo

It depends, if you prefer their more psychedelic phase or the heavy one. Try "The Sky Moves Sideways" of their psych phase or "In Absentia" and "Deadwing" of their heavier phase.

What e210013 said, but also Lightbulb Sun if you want to try their "poppier" phase

Yahhp In Absentia is a watershed moment in their discography. Everything they did before is less heavy and more psychedelic, in this phase Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are probably the easiest ones to get into (I prefer the latter one). For the heavier phase, In Absentia is the one with the most conventional songwriting, but I prefer FoaBP.

So I've actually been listening to "The sky moves Sideways" as I posted this, and while it's nice I feel like It could use some punch over these 15-30mins long atmospheric songs. It's decent but I feel like something with more energy could be a better gateway for me. Just got to Stars Die as I'm writing this.
The one song I remember listening to before that I really enjoyed was 'Shallow' of Deadwing

If you like shallow, In Absentia (or deadwing, but deadwing has longer meandering tracks on there) should be right up your ally

Fair enough, in that case I'll jump to Absentia and see where they take it from there

In Absentia's in my bottom 3 PT albums, but it's still pretty good

In Absentia is one of the least proggy albums they've written, it's understandable. I still like it for what it is, but I get it.

I'm taking it slow, rarely do albums click with me instantly (could probably count the times they did on my fingers). So far it's decent but after 1st playthough I certainly didn't digest it yet.
I'll take the approach of simply using it as my starting point and moving forward with their newer albums

Finally upgraded this to the land of 4.5

I used to think the lyrics let this album down but as I get older I’m getting drawn back to this more and more for its interesting take on youth apathy that is actually a unique perspective in music
