cowboys is definitely their peak, since its probably the only one i can spin cover to cover without being completely consumed with the feeling that it destroyed the mentality of self-proclaimed "metalheads" everywhere into turning into redneck bigots

Power Metal doesn't really have that either and it's also pretty good.

I'd argue Power Metal is really the only album you need pre-Cowboys, everything else from that era is mediocre to bad.

VDOP was definitely the most important thing going on in metal in ‘92. Grunge was taking over alternative music and besides maybe FNM there was nothing more crucial in advancing metal att. Darkthrone were creating a new genre but virtually no-one knew them outside Norway

Yeah maybe but unfortunately it spawned a legacy of metal needing to be hypermasculine toxic shite in the eyes of metalheads. Should've taken more cues from the punk scene, especially the ones that were taking a stand against the Nazi problem and weren't outright making white pride speeches at their shows like Anselmo was in the 90s. Maybe melo-core influenced by emo doesn't get the same level of toxic reactions without mentalities like that polluting the genre.
